There are several legends concerning his human origins, but the most famous story is his romance with the seventh daughter of the Dragon King. Han Xiangzi had been a student of Lu Dongbin and was famed for his masterful playing of a magical flute. One day while playing music on the shore of the East Sea he was overheard by Longnu who transformed herself into a silver eel. Her father forbade the relationship, but Longnu smuggled an enchanted bamboo (jade cylinder in some versions) to Han Xiangzi. He plays often in memory of her, brokenhearted by the knowledge that although both are immortal they can never reunite. He is the patron saint of musicians. His direction is southeast.
