A reader wrote in to ask what I thought of a weapon he saw on Amazon. It was a double crescent halberd, sometimes known as a Tian Fang Ji or a Hook Blade Spear. I learned the Northern Shaolin set for this weapon from Grandmaster Kwok Wing Lam of Sunnyvale (he sells several versions of the weapon at wle.com as well as a teaching DVD – WSL 35 in the Shaolin section). I bought an old-style Ji from Brendan Lai’s store more than 30 years ago. The new style of weapon has at least two versions: wood and stainless steel shafts. What’s very cool about the new versions is that they unscrew and can be packed for easy and undramatic transportation. See http://www.silverwolfwushu.com/WeaponsHalberd.html
