I decided that a display rack for Chen Zhenglei DVDs and books would be a good idea. The concept was the volumes would face outward showing the covers instead of being arranged where only the spine showed. It was the case that four 48″ shelves on a 48″ x 48″ piece of plywood would be enough.

First problem: at my local Home Depot no half-sheets of finished plywood that were more than 1/4″ thick. I had wanted 3/8″ or even 1/2″ thick plywood. So I figured the shelving would actually stiffen the plywood. And if there were still problems I could add some bracing out of sight on the back.

Then there were no (zero) 96″ pieces of 4″ wide birch or red oak available, but there were two pieces of maple that would not have to be cut.

Two pieces of quarter round moulding, Gorilla glue and some screws and we were all set. I already had sandpaper, Varathane and a paint brush, as well as spirits of turpentine and applicator rags
